There are few feelings better than watching the countdown to your vacation count down. Your flights are booked, your resort is reserved, and somewhere in the back of your mind you’re already picturing yourself lounging beside a pristine beach with a fruity drink in hand. Then reality sets in.

You open your suitcase and find yourself asking the age-old question:

“What the heck am I supposed to pack?”

The good news? Packing for an all-inclusive vacation is actually much easier than packing for most other trips. Since almost everything is already included, you can leave behind a lot of the “just in case” items that weigh down your suitcase. So we thought we’d share our packing guide with a few tips from our Wanderly Advisors to help you pack with confidence and start your vacation the moment you arrive.

First Things First: Pack for the Vacation You’re Taking

One mistakes travelers make is packing for every possible scenario.

  • “What if it gets cold?”
  • “What if we decide to go to a fancy dinner every night?”
  • “What if I need six pairs of shoes?”

Spoiler alert: You probably won’t.

Most all-inclusive vacations revolve around sunshine, relaxation, and comfort. You’ll likely spend your days by the pool, on the beach, exploring the resort, or enjoying an excursion. Comfortable, lightweight clothing is going to get far more use than one of those “maybe I’ll wear this” outfits.

But Remember… It’s Not Just About the Beach

When people picture an all-inclusive vacation, they usually imagine that all they will need is a swimsuit and some flip-flops. And yes… you’ll probably spend most of your trip exactly like that.

But don’t forget that most resorts have incredible specialty restaurants, evening entertainment, live music, and outdoor lounges. Many of the sit down restaurants even have a dress code that requires collared shirts for the men and resort casual attire for the ladies.

That doesn’t mean you need to pack a tuxedo or evening gown. It just means tossing a couple of nice sundresses or a few collared shirts into your suitcase.

The Little Things That Make the Biggest Difference

Ask any experienced travelers what they never leave home without, and you’ll hear some surprisingly simple answers.

  • A drink tumbler is perfect to keep frozen drinks cold while you’re soaking up the sun.
  • A waterproof phone pouch lets you capture perfect beach photos without risking an expensive swim for your phone.
  • A portable charger keeps your phone alive for a full day of taking pictures, navigating the resort, and texting everyone back home that “Yes, it’s absolutely gorgeous here.”

None of these items are essential but every one of them makes your vacation just a little bit easier.

Don’t Underestimate the Caribbean Sun

We’ve all heard someone say: “I don’t usually burn.”

Famous last words but the Caribbean sun doesn’t play around.

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be incredibly strong, and the last thing you want is to spend the rest of your vacation hiding in the shade slathering on aloe vera instead of enjoying the beach.

When it comes to the type of sunscreen to use, we always recommend packing reef-safe sunscreen. Not only will your skin thank you, but choosing reef-safe sunscreen also helps protect the beautiful coral reefs you’ll likely be snorkeling around.

It’s one of those small choices that makes a big difference.

Leave a Little Room for Adventure

It’s likely you are planning on spending the week doing absolutely nothing, and honestly that sound pretty amazing, but don’t sleep on the incredible excursions that are available. Some are just too tempting to pass up.

  • Maybe it’s ziplining through Costa Rica’s rainforest.
  • Swimming in a hidden cenote in Mexico.
  • Climbing Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica.
  • Snorkeling in Curaçao.
  • Or taking a sunset catamaran cruise.

Also, make sure to pack a lightweight backpack and comfortable walking shoes so you are ready if an excursion strikes your fancy.

Save Room for the Trip Home

Here’s something almost everyone forgets. You’re probably go home with more than you came with.

It could be locally roasted coffee, handmade artwork, Christmas ornaments, Caribbean rum (10 out of 10 recommend), spices, or gifts for family and friends.

Leaving a little extra space in your suitcase now can save you from playing an Olympic-level game of luggage Tetris before your flight home.

Packing isn’t really about what’s in your suitcase. It’s about peace of mind.

When you’ve packed using all our tips, you can stop worrying about what you forgot and start focusing on what really matters which is doing a lot of nothing and soaking in every minute of your vacation.

That’s exactly what an all-inclusive vacation is designed for.

Tips from Wanderly Travel Advisors

We could stop there. Here are some tips from our own advisors to get you ready for your trip.

From Suzanne:

It’s amazing to me that airlines can move millions of bags every year, but it’s my suitcase that’s always late. I always pack a swimsuit, medicine and a complete change of clothes in my carry-on so I can still arrive at the resort ready to get my vacation started instead of in the gift shop buy the necessities.

From Courtney:

When traveling with little ones, packing small toys for the pool are a big hit. In our recent trip to Punta Cana, I packed Moana figurines and all of the kids loved playing with them in the splash pad the whole time. Bringing a reusable cup with a lid is also great.

From Josie:

My list always includes an insulated tumbler for drinks, Aloe Vera (make sure to bring your own, much cheaper), a wide brimmed hat and make sure to leave a little room in your bag for any souvenirs

Because the only thing better than packing for paradise is knowing paradise is waiting for you.

When planning a dream vacation, most travelers focus on the exciting parts such as choosing destinations, booking excursions, and imagining the memories they’ll create. But one critical element often gets overlooked: Travel Protection. Travel protection isn’t just an optional add-on; it’s a vital safeguard for your investment and peace of mind.

That’s why we’ve put together the top eight reasons why travel protection is so important. In this post, you’ll learn how it can save the day when plans change unexpectedly—whether it’s a weather delay, a medical emergency, or even a lost suitcase. These tips will help you understand the real value of travel insurance and why it’s one of the smartest decisions you can make before your next adventure.

  1. Heading to Hurricane-Prone Areas?

If your vacation takes you to regions known for hurricanes or severe weather, travel protection is non-negotiable. Storms can lead to canceled flights, closed resorts, and disrupted itineraries. Without insurance, you could lose thousands of dollars in non-refundable costs. A comprehensive policy can cover trip cancellations, interruptions, and even additional expenses if you need to change plans due to weather.

  1. Medical Emergencies at Sea: What Happens Next?

Cruises are a fantastic way to explore the world, but what if you become seriously ill or injured onboard? Cruise lines will stabilize you and transport you to the nearest port for treatment—regardless of where that port is. From there, you’re responsible for getting home. Without travel insurance, arranging and paying for emergency transportation can be overwhelming and extremely costly.

  1. 24/7 Assistance When You Need It Most

Most reputable travel insurance companies offer a 24/7 assistance desk. This service is invaluable if you need help finding appropriate medical care abroad or arranging transportation back to the U.S. They can coordinate with local hospitals, manage language barriers, and ensure you receive the care you need quickly.

  1. Your Health Insurance May Not Work Overseas

Many travelers assume their domestic health insurance will cover them internationally—but that’s often not the case. Even if it does, coverage may be limited, and you could face high out-of-pocket costs. Travel insurance fills this gap, providing coverage for medical expenses abroad.

  1. Medical Evacuations Are Shockingly Expensive

If you need to be medically evacuated, whether from a remote island or a foreign city, the cost can easily exceed $50,000. Travel insurance can cover these expenses, ensuring you’re transported safely without draining your savings.

  1. Baggage Delays Can Ruin a Trip

Imagine arriving at your destination without your luggage. A good travel insurance policy can reimburse you for essentials like clothing and toiletries if your bags are delayed, helping you enjoy your trip without unnecessary stress.

  1. Travel Delays Can Be Costly

Flight delays happen, and sometimes they mean an unexpected overnight stay. Without insurance, you’ll pay for hotels, meals, and transportation out of pocket. Travel protection can cover these expenses, turning a frustrating situation into a manageable one.

  1. Coverage for Trip Interruptions

Life happens, even when you’re on vacation. If you need to cut your trip short because of an emergency back home, an illness, or another unexpected event, travel protection can help. It often reimburses you for the unused portion of your trip and covers the cost of getting home quickly. Instead of worrying about losing money or scrambling to make arrangements, you can focus on what matters most.

The Bottom Line

Travel protection isn’t just about covering worst-case scenarios—it’s about ensuring your vacation remains enjoyable, even when the unexpected happens. From hurricanes to medical emergencies, baggage delays to flight cancellations, insurance provides a safety net that protects both your investment and your well-being.

Before your next trip, talk to your travel advisor about the best travel protection options for your itinerary. It’s a small cost compared to the peace of mind it brings.

Travel Protection FAQs

Do I really need travel protection if I am healthy?

Yes. Travel protection is not only about medical emergencies. It also covers trip cancellations, delays, interruptions, baggage issues, and unexpected events such as severe weather or airline disruptions. Even healthy travelers can experience situations that result in significant out-of-pocket expenses without coverage.

Isn’t travel protection expensive?

Travel protection is typically a small percentage of the overall trip cost. Compared to the potential financial impact of medical care, evacuation, or last-minute travel changes, it is often one of the most cost-effective parts of a vacation.

Will my credit card provide the same coverage?

Some credit cards offer limited travel benefits, but these protections are often restricted and may not include medical coverage, emergency evacuation, or comprehensive trip interruption benefits. Coverage limits and eligibility requirements can vary widely. Travel protection policies are designed specifically for travel-related risks and offer broader support.

Does travel protection cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Many travel protection plans offer coverage for pre-existing conditions if the policy is purchased within a specified time frame after your initial trip deposit. Your travel advisor can help determine eligibility and guide you through plan options that may include this benefit.

What happens if I need medical care while traveling internationally?

Travel protection can help cover eligible medical expenses abroad and provide access to assistance services that help locate appropriate care. In many cases, it also helps coordinate payment and transportation so you are not navigating the situation alone.

What is emergency medical evacuation?

Emergency medical evacuation provides transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or back home if medically necessary. These services can be extremely expensive without coverage, especially from remote destinations or international locations.

Does travel protection cover weather-related disruptions?

Yes, many plans cover trip cancellations, interruptions, and delays caused by severe weather, including hurricanes. Coverage depends on policy terms and timing, which is why reviewing options early is important.

Can I buy travel protection at any time?

Travel protection should be purchased soon after making your initial trip deposit to maximize benefits. Some important coverages, such as pre-existing condition waivers, may only be available if the policy is purchased within a specific window.

What if I have to cancel my trip for a personal reason?

Standard policies cover cancellations for specific covered reasons. Some plans offer additional flexibility options that allow cancellations for a broader range of circumstances. Your travel advisor can explain which options align with your needs.

How do I choose the right travel protection plan?

Not all trips require the same coverage. Your destination, trip length, activities, and overall investment all matter. Your travel advisor will help you select a plan that fits your itinerary and priorities, ensuring you have appropriate coverage without paying for unnecessary extras.

It seems so glamorous, right? Travel advisors jet off on free trips, get amazing discounts, and rack up perks just for posting beach selfies and sipping piña coladas.

If only!

The truth? Being a travel advisor is a rewarding and exciting career—but it’s also a lot of work. And honestly, much of that work is very unglamorous. The industry is largely unregulated, and if you’re willing to “pay to play,” there are agencies out there that will take your money and call you an agent with little to no training or support.

Our agency is not one of those.

We believe in professionalism, passion, and putting clients first—and that means we’re looking for the right people to join our team. So how do you know if this career is right for you?

Here are 5 reasons you might be a great travel advisor, and 5 reasons it might not be the right fit:

✅ You Might Be a Great Travel Advisor If…

1. You have sales experience (or a sales mindset).
First and foremost, being a travel advisor is a sales job. You need to be able to connect with people, understand what they want, and recommend the best options for them—while closing the sale with confidence.

2. You’re the go-to person for travel advice.
Are your friends always asking you where to stay, what to do, and how to book their trips? That’s a great sign you’ve already built trust and credibility—and that’s half the battle.

3. You’re highly organized.
Between payment deadlines, booking confirmations, vendor contracts, dining reservations, and client reminders, you’ll be juggling a lot of details. A system (and a love for checklists!) is essential.

4. You stay calm under pressure.
Flights get canceled. Cruises get rerouted. Luggage gets lost. Can you remain cool, get on the phone, and help solve your client’s problem—even if it’s 10 p.m. on a Friday night? Flexibility and grace under pressure are a must.

5. You genuinely love to travel.
You don’t have to be a globe-trotter, but a passion for discovering new destinations—and ideally, traveling at least once a year—helps you connect with your clients and bring first-hand insight to your planning.

❌ It Might Not Be a Good Fit If…

1. You don’t like talking to people.
This is a personal service business. You need to enjoy connecting with clients, building relationships, and communicating clearly—whether it’s on the phone, over Zoom, or in your DMs.

2. You aren’t confident in your research skills.
You won’t know everything, and that’s okay! But you do need to be resourceful and willing to dig into supplier systems, travel forums, and official documentation to get the right info. (Spoiler: Google isn’t always your friend.)

3. You’re uncomfortable with social media.
Clients book with people they know, like, and trust—and social media is one of the best ways to build that connection. You don’t need to be a TikTok star, but you do need to show up, share valuable content, and stay visible.

4. You need money right now.
Travel agents are typically paid after the client travels—often months after the initial booking. You may also choose to charge planning fees, but if you’re looking for immediate income, this likely isn’t the right fit (yet).

5. You want to only travel.
Yes, we travel—and sometimes for amazing prices! But the job is not a vacation. If you’re only interested in free trips and don’t love the idea of behind-the-scenes work, long hours, and ongoing client communication, this isn’t the dream gig you’re imagining.

When you are heading on a Disney vacation you are used to doing a lot of waiting… and I am not talking about the waiting in line. You book your resort package then you wait… You book your flights then you wait… You make your activity plans then you wait…

I am always trying to find different ways to keep the MAGIC of Disney alive when I am away from Disney (aka planning my next Disney vacation). Here are a few ways to make the time fly while doing the Disney Waiting Dance:

GAMES

There are so many fun smartphone games to kill time between Disney vacations. Three of my favorites are Frozen Free Fall (there are also version for Maleficient), Disney Magic Kingdoms and Disney Enchanted Tales.

Free Fall is a connect three game similar to Candy Crush. Magic Kingdoms and Enchanted Tales are both community building games. Magic Kingdoms allows you to build your own theme park. Enchanted Tales uses three familiar stories (Beauty and the Beast, Frozen and Tangled) to build villages.

FACEBOOK

Find the Facebook page for the month you are visiting. There are pages for both theme park visits as well as cruises. The month pages will have a plethora of information specific to the time you are visiting such as attraction closures, park events, and even dates and times for any in-park meet ups. The cruise pages will also have meet-up info, links to Fish Extender groups, and cruise events.

If you don’t have your next Disney vacation planned… yet… you can also find a fun Disney group and join the conversation. And, of course, don’t forget to follow Wanderly Adventures on Facebook for up-to-date breaking news and vacation planning information. (Sorry, I had to get a plug in there.)

DISNEY+

Disney+ joined the streaming ranks in November, 2019. With it came a wealth of Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and National Geographic content. The content includes everything from classic Disney movies to new original content from nearly every intellectual properties across the Disney universe.

PORT CAMS

If you are waiting for a Disney Cruise Line, there are port cams all around the world recording the movements of cruise ships. However, there are a few which regularly highlight the ships of Disney Cruise Line.

Port Canaveral Cam
Port Nassau Cam
Two Palms

If you have a few minutes on a Friday afternoon or a Monday afternoon around 5:00pm you may even see the Disney ships leave Port Canaveral and hear those MAGICAL horns.

SORCERER RADIO

Sorcerer Radio is a smartphone app and website which plays music inspired by the Disney parks and resorts. You will hear everything from attraction queue soundtracks to resort lobby soundtracks. Each night you are also treated to a soundtrack from one of the nighttime spectaculars.

YOUTUBE

Whether it’s ride Point-of-View videos, vacation trip reports, nighttime spectaculars, official Disney videos, or Disney music compilations, just searching the word Disney will return hours of fun content.

My newest obsession is the music loops from the Disney Parks. There are so many to choose from I didn’t even know where to begin. Each loop is roughly an hour long and features the soundtrack for a location in the Parks. Whether it’s the whimsical music at the entrance to Magic Kingdom Park, the ethereal music of the Epcot entrance or the classic themes from the Great Movie Ride exterior music, there is sure to be something there for you. Here are a few of my favorites:

Adventureland Area Music Loop
Great Movie Ride Exterior Loop
Epcot Entrance Music Loop
Magic Kingdom Entrance Music Loop
Main Street Holiday Christmas Loop
Main Street USA Area Music Loop
Soarin’ Queue Loop
The Living Seas – Area Music Loop
Tomorrowland Area Music Loop

For those of you who are Disneyland fans, have no fear, there are bunches of music loops for you too:

Buena Vista Street Area Music Loop
Disneyland Frontierland Music Loop
Disneyland’s New Orleans Square Music Loop
Grand Californian California Adventure Entrance Music Loop
Jungle Cruise Music Loop – Disneyland
Main Street, USA (Disneyland) Music Loop

Say goodbye to the next few hours as you enjoy these great time killers which are sure to bring back fond memories of your time in the Most Magical Place on Earth and get you even more excited to return.

As your travel agency, we understand our clients value seamless and stress-free travel experiences. With the upcoming enforcement of the Real ID Act, it’s essential to be well-prepared to ensure your travels remain uninterrupted. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the Real ID, including what it is, why it’s important, how to obtain it, and the necessary documentation.

What is the Real ID?

Navigating Real ID RequirementsThe Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. These standards were recommended by the 9/11 Commission to enhance the reliability and accuracy of state-issued I

Ds, making it more difficult for terrorists and other criminals to obtain fraudulent identification. (1)

Starting May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification, to fly within the United States (2). Real ID-compliant cards are marked with a star at the top of the card.

Why is the Real ID Important for Travelers?

For vacation travelers, the Real ID is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Air Travel: Beginning May 7, 2025, you will not be able to board a federally regulated commercial aircraft without a Real ID-compliant card or an acceptable alternative such as a passport (2).
  2. Access to Federal Facilities: Real ID is required to enter federal government facilities, military bases, and nuclear power plants (1).
  3. Enhanced Security: The Real ID enhances security by making it more difficult to obtain fraudulent identification, thus ensuring safer travel environments (

How to Obtain a Real ID

Obtaining a Real ID involves a few straightforward steps, but it’s important to gather the correct documentation and follow the process specific to your state. Here’s a general overview:

  1. Check Your Current ID: Look for a star in the upper right-hand corner of your driver’s license or state ID. If you see a star, your ID is already Real ID-compliant (2).
  2. Gather Required Documents: You will need to provide several documents to prove your identity, Social Security number, and residency. The exact documents required can vary by state, but generally include:
    • Proof of Identity: U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) if you are a non-U.S. citizen (1)
    • Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card, Form W-2, or a pay stub with your Social Security number (1).
    • Proof of Residency: Utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement, or mortgage statement (1)
  3. Visit Your State’s DMV: Go to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website to find specific instructions and to make an appointment if necessary (3).
  4. Submit Your Application: Bring your documents to the DMV, complete the application, and pay any applicable fees (3)

Detailed Documentation Requirements

To ensure a smooth application process, it’s important to have the correct documentation. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  1. Proof of Identity:
    • U.S. Birth Certificate: Must be an original or certified copy.
    • U.S. Passport: Valid and unexpired.
    • Permanent Resident Card: For non-U.S. citizens, this must be valid and unexpired (1)
  2. Proof of Social Security Number:
    • Social Security Card: Must be an original card.
    • Form W-2: Shows your earnings and Social Security number.
    • Pay Stub: Must include your name and Social Security number (1)
  3. Proof of Residency:
    • Utility Bill: Must be recent and show your name and address.
    • Bank Statement: Must be recent and show your name and address.
    • Lease Agreement: Must be current and include your name and address.
    • Mortgage Statement: Must be current and include your name and address (1)

Special Considerations for Luxury Travelers

As a luxury traveler, you may have unique circumstances that require additional considerations:

  1. Multiple Residences: If you have multiple residences, you may need to provide proof of residency for each location. Check with your state’s DMV for specific requirements (3).
  2. International Travel: While a Real ID is sufficient for domestic flights, you will still need a passport for international travel. Ensure your passport is up-to-date and valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date (2).
  3. Private Jet Travel: If you frequently travel by private jet, check with your service provider to ensure they accept Real ID-compliant cards for identification (2).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a Real ID if I have a passport?
A: If you have a valid passport, you can use it as an alternative to a Real ID for domestic flights and access to federal facilities. However, having a Real ID can be more convenient for everyday use (2).

Q: Can I still use my current driver’s license?
A: After May 7, 2025, you will not be able to use a non-Real ID-compliant driver’s license for domestic flights or access to federal facilities. You can still use it for other purposes, such as driving and general identification (2).

Q: What if my name has changed?
A: If your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or another reason, you will need to provide legal documentation of the name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order (1).

Q: How long does it take to get a Real ID?
A: The processing time for a Real ID can vary by state. It’s best to apply well in advance of any planned travel to ensure you receive your Real ID in time.

As a luxury traveler, being prepared and informed about the new requirements will help you continue to enjoy seamless and stress-free journeys. Make sure to check your current ID, gather the necessary documentation, and apply for your Real ID well before the May 7, 2025, deadline.

It’s no secret that vacations can be pricey. However, with proper planning, you can manage your expenses throughout the trip planning process. This includes creating a detailed budget that factors in all potential costs—not just airfare, accommodations, and food. Let’s explore how to create a comprehensive budget by considering all aspects of a vacation. …

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. They are supposed to be a time when you and your family can get away from the monotony of life and escape. However, the planning that goes into making the vacation go off without a hitch can be exhausting. That’s where a travel agent comes in and takes on all the planning duties… wait a minute… you don’t use a travel agent?!?! Why not?!?!

Here are the 10 reasons YOU should use a travel agent for your next vacation:

10. Travel Agents Save You Precious Time

Time is money. Expedia documented that Americans spent 8.7 billion minutes travel planning in 2016. On an individual basis, another study showed that the average individual spends 10-30 hours planning their own vacation. (Some types of vacations such as a Walt Disney World vacation can take double that time.) Even though some vacations require almost a week’s worth of planning time, only 13% of travelers used a travel agent.

Let’s numerize this for a second: The average American hourly wage is $23.46 and like we said each person can spend up an average of 20 hours planning their family vacation. That means just the vacation planning will cost you $469.20.

That’s pretty eye opening and begs the question, what is your time worth to you?

9. Travel Agents are Money Savers

Agents know where to look to find deals and promotions regular travelers might not. They also know when special offers drop that might lower the prices or offer increased amenities. Here’s the best part, research shows travel agents can save customers an average $452 per trip.

8. Travel Agents Offer Better Cash Management Options

When booking yourself, you will likely have to pay for your entire vacation at the time of booking. However, when booking with a travel agent guests have the option of making a ‘down payment’ which, if you are a good financial steward, will keep the remaining money in your account where it can be working for you… assuming you have that money sitting in some kind of interest bearing account.

7. Travel Agents are Matchmakers

Similar to “The Bachelorette”, but without the bikini-clad craziness, travel agents take the time to get to know you, your family, your budget, your like and your dislikes. They will use this information to match you with the best vacation for your specific scenario.

6. Travel Agents Unhide the Hidden Costs

It’s our job as travel agents to read the fine print. Is a resort fee charged? Is there a parking fee? Does the quote include taxes? How about all the fees associated with flying certain airlines? We can tell you way ahead of time EXACTLY how much your vacation will cost so there will be no surprises when you show up.

5. Travel Agents Can be Lifesavers

Sometimes bad things happen to good people. A travel agent can be your intercessory when reservations snafus happen, dining reservations get lost, and even when a family member falls ill while on vacation. As travel agents, we are often privy to special phone numbers that put us ahead of those in the general queue.

4. Travel Agents Have Been There, Done That

Most travel agents are well-traveled individuals. We have experienced destinations around the world and are ready to impart the information to their clients. We know the best hotel locations, the nearest airports and the most sought-after excursions, attractions, dining experiences and tours.

3. Travel Agent Provide Customized Planning and Support

From the time your vacation begins as a dream to after you have returned home, your travel agent will be at your side every step of the way. The same can’t be said for that cut rate website or discount retailer who is offering a deal that seems too good to be true? Here’s a hint: it is to good to be true.

What those websites and retailers aren’t telling you is once you give them your money they are gone like the wind. They aren’t going to help you with excursion reservations, resort and stateroom requests, FastPass+ selections, Advanced Dining Reservations and itinerary planning. And God forbid something goes wrong while you are on your vacation. A travel agent, on the other hand, will be there before, during and after travel we will consult, confer and debrief with you to make sure your trip is everything you imagined.

Listen, I completely understandable that some folks love to do all the planning themselves. No problem!! (FYI, I am one of those people.) After booking, travel agents can do as much or as little as you want. But remember, it’s always good to have a travel agent in your corner even if it’s just as a sounding board, to monitor special offers, or to be there if an unforeseeable issue happens.

2. You are Supporting Small Businesses in Your Community

Gone are the days of brick & mortar travel agencies. (Sure, a few still exist.) Nowadays, most travel agents are running their business out of their home. And instead of supporting some executive’s second home in Bora Bora, you are financing a little girl’s piano lessons or a pair of cleats for a soccer-playing teenager. By using a travel agent, you will be keeping that money in your local community.

1. They are FREE

You read that right. FREE!! Rarely in this world will you find a service which is 100% free. No hidden cost! No small print! That is true with most travel agents. We are 100% free. There is not one cent of added cost for our services. You get pricing research, accommodation booking, special offer monitoring, itinerary planning, tour and excursion reservations, all for the low, low, low, low bargain price of FREE.

So how do we get paid then? We get paid by the destinations AFTER YOU TRAVEL. That’s right… all the researching, planning and keeping your planning on track is free.

Now the question becomes: Why aren’t you using a travel agent?

When preparing for a Disney park day, you’ve likely seen endless lists of what to pack in your bag—some of which can be overwhelming. We get it; you want to be prepared. Instead, a minimalist approach not only enhances your experience but also complements the premium service and convenience Disney already provides.

A common misconception about cruising is that seasickness is inevitable for everyone. The good news? With some strategic planning and modern remedies, you can enjoy your voyage without worry.

When my family first sailed with Disney Cruise Line, we were unsure how our then-5-year-old daughter would handle the ship’s motion, since she hadn’t been on the open sea before. After thorough research (much of which is included below), we found what worked best for her and had an unforgettable, seasickness-free vacation.

Understanding Seasickness

Seasickness, or motion sickness, occurs when your inner ear’s balance system (the vestibular apparatus) sends signals that don’t align with the motion your eyes and body are experiencing. This sensory mismatch can lead to nausea, dizziness, and even vomiting in severe cases.

Three Main Types of Seasickness Remedies

We’ll cover prevention, non-medicinal remedies, and medicinal options to help ensure smooth sailing.

Preventing Seasickness Before You Set Sail

  1. Choose a Newer Ship – Newer cruise ships feature advanced stabilization technology that minimizes the effects of rough seas.
  2. Book a Mid-Ship Cabin – Select a stateroom midship on a lower deck, where the motion of the sea is least noticeable.
  3. Opt for a stateroom with a verandah – Fresh air and a view of the horizon can help your body adjust to the motion.
  4. Avoid Hurricane Season – In the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, hurricanes can occur anytime between June to November.
  5. Sail Calm Waters – The Caribbean and Mediterranean tend to be calmer than the open Atlantic or Pacific.
  6. Sleep Well – Being well-rested can help your body better handle motion.
  7. Avoid Alcohol – A mild hangover can make you more susceptible to seasickness.
  8. Mind Your Diet – Avoid greasy, acidic, or spicy foods like coffee or orange juice before boarding.
  9. Hydrate – Start drinking water 24-48 hours before your trip, aiming for at least 64 ounces per day.
  10. Boost with Vitamin B6This vitamin may help ward off seasickness; start taking 100mg doses a few days before departure.
  11. Ear Care – Make sure your ears are clear of wax, and address any sinus issues that could impact your inner ear.

Preventing Seasickness Onboard

  1. Relax – Anxiety can worsen seasickness symptoms. Stay calm and enjoy the cruise.
  2. Eat in Moderation – Overeating can make nausea worse, so stick to balanced meals.
  3. Snack on Protein – Keep energy levels steady by eating protein-rich snacks, rather than sugary or greasy foods.
  4. Take Breaks from Screens – Reading, or staring at a phone, tablet, or laptop can trigger nausea. Try to focus on the horizon instead.
  5. Avoid Sick Passengers – Seeing others get sick can trigger your own symptoms.

Non-Medicinal Seasickness Remedies

  1. Focus on the Horizon – Stabilizing your gaze on a fixed point helps your brain adjust to the motion.
  2. Get Fresh Air – Stepping out on deck or into an open-air balcony can ease queasiness.
  3. Use Ginger – Ginger, in all forms (candies, gum, chews, capsules), can soothe nausea. Just consult a doctor if you’re taking blood thinners.
  4. P6 Pressure PointTry Acupressure – Apply pressure to the P6 point on your wrist (three fingers’ width from your palm). Sea-Bands are a popular, effective option.
  5. Wear Motion-Sickness Bands – Devices like Sea-Bands can simulate the acupressure. There are also ReliefBands which use gentle electrical pulses to the P6 pressure point.
  6. Jump in the Pool – Swimming can stabilize your body by simulating non-sea motion.
  7. Breathe Deeply – Deep, steady breaths (in and out to a count of five) can help calm nausea.
  8. Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water or ginger ale to keep your body in balance.
  9. Avoid Smoking – Besides its other harmful effects, smoking can worsen seasickness due to the smell and lung irritation.

Medicinal Seasickness Remedies

For those who prefer medicinal options, be sure to consult your doctor before your cruise.

  1. Dramamine – A classic seasickness remedy, available in non-drowsy versions.
  2. Scopolamine Patch – Worn behind the ear, this patch offers long-lasting relief.
  3. Bonine – Another over-the-counter option that’s less likely to cause drowsiness than Dramamine.
  4. Gravol – Available in various forms, including chewable tablets.
  5. QueaseEase – A natural remedy using essential oils to combat nausea.
  6. Sleep Aids – If seasickness affects your sleep, consider using a mild, doctor-approved sleep aid.

What Worked for Us

Before our Disney Cruise, we gave our daughter half a tablet of Dramamine starting two days before embarkation and continued throughout the cruise. Not even a hint of seasickness! While she may not have gotten seasick, it was comforting to know we took precautions. In luxury family travel, peace of mind is key.

Mind Over Matter

A 2013 study found that placebo treatments, combined with positive verbal suggestions, reduced seasickness symptoms. This shows that staying positive and keeping a calm mindset can be just as important as any remedy.

Final Thoughts
